Hanoi city has areas that are considered to be of high conservation value with specific features such as: (1) The area of alluvial grounds and the middle of the Red River is of special importance for birds. migration due to being located on the East Asia-Australia migration route (Le Manh Hung and Vuong Tien Manh, 2017); (2) Huong Son Special-use forest area, My Duc district, which has an important limestone forest ecosystem in the North and is also one of three areas where the Delacour’s langur (Trachypithecus delacouri) is critically endangered (Do Quang Huy and Vu Tien Thinh, 2013), and many reptile species endemic to the limestone areas of northern Vietnam such as Cyrtodactylus huongsonensis; and (3) Ba Vi National Park has native flora of Vietnam – South China, has recorded eight endemic plant species, 64 rare animal species, including two endemic species such as Tropidophous baviensis and Chaparana delacouri (Nguyen Hai Ha and Nguyen Thi Hai Ninh, 2014).
Huong Son special-use forest covers an area of more than 4,200 ha, characterized by an ecosystem of tropical moist evergreen closed forests on rocky mountains. This place is known for the harmonious combination between the natural landscape of the limestone mountains with a system of caves, historical sites, temples, shrines, etc., creating magnificent beauty, attracting tourists, and researchers from many different fields. Huong Son special-use forest is not only known for its beauty and attractive tourist destination, but also has high value in genetic resources conservation and scientific research.
Implement the project “Conservation and development of wild animals and plants with rare genetic resources in Hanoi city” with two main contents: (1) Conservation and restoration of precious primate species rare in Huong Son Special-use forest, My Duc district, Hanoi city and (2) Propaganda and awareness raising for officials and people about the conservation values of endangered wild animals and plants, precious and rare in Hanoi city. The implementation project will more fully supplement basic research data on different areas of primate fauna in Huong Son Special-use forest as well as serve as a scientific basis for conservation, reintroduction, and development activities.
Objectives:
– Conservation and restoration of rare primates in Huong Son Special-use forest, My Duc, Hanoi city;
– Propagating to raise awareness for officials and people about the conservation values of endangered, precious and rare wild animals and plants in Hanoi city.
Mission:
– Additional investigation on the status of Macaca spp. in Huong Son special-use forest
– Investigate the current status of Delacour’s langur (Trachypithecus delacouri) in Huong Son special-use forest
– Investigate the habitat and distribution according to the habitat of the Nycticebus coucang, Nycticebus pygmaeus, Macaca spp. and Trachypithecus delacouri
– Assess the potential of areas in Huong Son special-use forest that can re-release primates into the natural environment.
– Survey and assess the socio-economic situation of communes in Huong Son Special-use forest. Analyze the causes affecting the management, protection, conservation and development of forest resources. And propose appropriate solutions for socio-economic development for the community living around the Special-use forest
– Survey and assess the current status of management, conservation and factors affecting primate species
– Develop a plan to monitor populations and habitats for primates in Huong Son special-use forest
– Propaganda to raise awareness for officials and people about the conservation values of endangered, precious and rare wild animals and plants in Hanoi city.
