Getting the right data is very important, but sometime it’s even more important to find out what data really mean. At GFD we work hard to provide our client with accurate data , and more importantly to help them unlock the hidden message behind the data, to present data in the most convincing way to decision maker, and to make it understandable for the general public.

In this example we present the data of bare land vs. plantation forest for all provinces in Vietnam in the perdiod 1999 to 2004.Each province was presented by a dot, and you can customize the color and the size of the dot by the data value.

Looking at the motion of the chart reveal some interesting information. For example, Binh Phuoc have made some progress on 1999 –2004 but then lost more than 20.000 ha of plantation forest at the end of 2006. This can be explained by the booming industrialization recently happened on this province. Another strange move is Son La and Lai Chau, these 2 provinces have reduced their bare land by almost half a million ha in 7 years but do not really make progress in plantation.

While all of this information is already available on the data sheet, having it visually presented and being able to see how the data is changed over the time is a powerful way to really understand and explore the data.

This motion chart is made using the Google Spreadsheet gadget. It allow dynamic display of 2 variable data over a period of time. More information on Google API and gadget can be found here
